Read on for the materials list and the how to.
Materials List
- (4) 1" Wooden Dowels
- (1) 5/16" Wooden Dowel
- (3) Styrofoam Balls 4"+ in diameter
- (1) Foam Pipe Insulation with a interior diameter of 1"
- Wide Shiny Duct Tape
- (3) Pie Tins or heavy wooden circles for base
- (4) Key Rings with Trigger Hooks
- (4) Cup Hooks
- Spray Paint in Red, Gold
- Wood Glue/Locktite
- Screws
- Saw
- Drill
- 5/16" drill bit
- If you are creating more than (3) stanchions you will need to adjust your materials list to include more bases, 1" dowel rods, hardware, styrofoam balls and foam insulation.
Step One:
Start by cutting the foam insulation in half to make two pieces. Carefully hold it by one end and spray paint it red (Fig. 1), you will need two coats most likely depending on the paint. Use a clothes pin to hang the insulation until it dries, then wrap around your silver duct tape to each of the ends on the insulation pieces (Fig. 2).
Step Two:
To assemble your stanchions, start by drilling into one end of each of (3) 1" dowels with your 5/16" drill bit (Fig. 3). Cut your 5/16" dowel into (3) 2" long pieces and cut (4) 2" long pieces off of your extra 1" dowel rod as well (Fig. 4). Insert one of each into the ends of your 1" dowels and secure with wood glue or locktite if needed, then let dry (Fig. 5). Screw in your cup hooks, one on each of the (4) 2" pieces cut from the 1" dowel (Fig. 6).
Step Three:
Find the centers of your round wooden base pieces or pie tins and mark them with a dot. Using a drill bit that matches the diameter of your screws, drill a hole through the center of each tin/wood piece (Fig. 7). Do the same for the ends of each of your 1" wood dowels (the end you have not already worked on.) Attach the wood bases/ pie tins (inverted with the lip of the tin resting on the floor) to the 1" dowels using your screws (Fig. 8). Secure with more glue if you feel it is needed, then let dry. Now that you have assembled your three stanchions, place one Styrofoam ball onto each of the 5/16" dowels poking out of the top of your stanchions to form a hole, then remove it. Add your key rings over top of the dowel then place your Styrofoam ball back on with locktite glue and let dry (Fig. 9).
Step Four:
Spray paint your entire stanchion gold and let dry. (Fig. 10) Put each of the 2" dowel pieces with cup hooks attached into the ends of the foam pipe insulation pieces, with the cup hook end facing outward (Fig. 11).
Step Five:
Attach your trigger hooks to each of your key rings on the stanchions, then place your "ropes" on the stanchions with the cup hooks joining to the trigger hooks. (Fig. 13)
